Fruit Roll-up Dragon

I have made some pretty ambitious Birthday cakes for my boys over the years. Some cakes have turned out great like the fruit roll-up winged dragon cake (well I thought it was great) and some have turned out like giant yummy messes. One of my worst is the year I tried to make an edible millennium falcon and I don’t have a photo because that year I couldn’t wait for excuse to cut it and destroy the evidence LOL! One of the things I find so awesome about being a mom is that if I put in the effort they will ooh and awe even when I don’t think I deserve it.

Here We Go!

This year for my 11 year old’s birthday I have decided to attempt my first ever pinata cake and because that is not impressive enough for my oldest he has requested a marshmallow flash symbol on top!

Today i’m starting off with two boxes of whatever is the birthday boys favorite and in my case happens to be on sale. This time its chocolate cake with marshmallow frosting. The frosting was partially chosen for its potential to by dyed red (flash colors).

  • 2 cake mixes of choice (Mix as directed for two)
  • eggs
  • oil
  • 2 frosting of choice
  • 1 bag of mini marshmallows
  • 1 box of Jello
  • butter
  • powdered sugar

I made both boxes as directed (double recipe) than divided it as evenly as possible between 3 pans.

NOTE: if you only have 2 identical pans like me it can be done in as a process. also part of the trick with this is cooling- too soon it crumbles too late it seems to get wet. I suggest 10 min

I’m sure there are dozens of tools to accomplish this part but I like reuse when possible and who doesn’t want to save money. This is a jar that used to hold jam

Find center and gently press down, repeat on one of the other cakes. When you remove the jar at a slight angle you will find most of the cake in the jar and whats left you can remove with a spoon.

Ice witch ever will be the bottom cake, if one came out less pretty than the others this is a great chance to hide the imperfection.

Stack and than fill with whatever your favorite candy is!

If you are like me you might be thinking yuck chocolate, marshmallow, and skittles together! But also like me you’d be wrong. Jareth chose pineapple for the marshmallow fondant and I think it turned out great if not a little strange!

What do you think think masterpiece or big gooey mess?
